grandpa is waiting for me 

to tell him a fairy tale

The first two lines offer a strong visual to welcome us into the scene. White ribbons are symbols of hope to lift the spirits of both patients and front-line medical staff. How deftly, the writer cinematically transports us from the outdoors, into the hospital, and finally to grandpa’s bedside. “In the palliative ward” shows that grandpa has an illness with no cure. Hanging from branches” suggests “hanging on”, which is what grandpa is doing. The matter-of-fact tone belies the experience of being with the dying and is the driving force behind this tanka.

Comment

The photo-haikuist crafted a conversation poem. We hear just the interlocutor’s side of the dialog, but we feel the author’s side through the coldness of the steps. The haiku maintains a good rhythm and perfect line endings that match the stride of the couple approaching Isaniwa Shrine who are likely in need of saying a prayer.

HAIKU DIALOGUE – Finding peace and contemplation… in quiet spaces… in a gallery - March 16

the girl’s watercolors
in all rooms
my museum

I was drawn to this gentle haiku – yesterday my young granddaughter made me a gift of one of her paintings. This haiku encapsulates the loving bond between generations. The poet is surrounded in their own home by works of art they love. No need for art in galleries, the joys are in every room.
