scenting the homesickness
of each immigrant
The sensitivity of the poet shines through this senryu. Immigrants, when first arriving in a country, frequently have difficulty in finding paid employment. They often resort to picking fruit in remote areas, which adds to their hardship in adjusting to the new culture. ‘scenting’ juxtaposes the sweetness of the strawberries with the bitterness of homesickness. A gentle, empathetic poem.
